Consequences Are Your Friends
Jeremiah 2:28 But where are your gods that you have made for yourselves? Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble.
Some actions that result from poor decisions naturally have consequences that teach the foolishness of the decision: not thinking before speaking, for instance, inevitably leads to wounded relationships. At other times parents establish logical consequences that match the infraction: when a child has been told not to throw the ball in the house and does so anyway, resulting in a broken vase, that child pays for a replacement. Natural consequences and logical consequences can teach important lessons.
Perhaps that is one reason why God-who always forgives our sins when we confess them-does not always rescue us from the consequences for those sinful decisions. He knows the value of letting us experience the full effects of our poor choices.
In the verse above, God asks His people who have turned from Him where their false gods are now. Perhaps experiencing the impotence of their idols will keep God's people from turning to them next time.
What consequences has God allowed you-or is He allowing you-to face because of your sin? Those consequences can transform you if you will learn from them.
