Open My Eyes!
Psalm 119:18 Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.
The story is told of a prisoner locked away in solitary confinement for thirty-three years with a single book: the Bible. After he died, the people who cleaned out his cell found some interesting sentences etched on the wall:
Psalm 118:8 is the middle verse in the Bible. Ezra 7:21 contains all the letters of the alphabet bu the letter "J". The ninth verse of the eighth chapter of Ester is the longest verse in the Bible. No word or name in the Bible has more than 6 syllables.
Clearly, this prisoner was captive to more than a jail. He was constrained by blindness to the relevance and the truth of God's Word. He spent years, even decades, with the Bible and came up with only odd bits of trivia. Tragically, the timeless words of Scripture apparently did not touch his heart.
Even the most brilliant scholars who study God's Word will remain unchanged by its truth apart from the work of the Holy Spirit. God's Word does not simply provide information. It draws us to Him, and He gives us life. God Himself opens our eyes to the truth of His Word and makes the Scriptures come alive to us.
