Spiritual Examinations
2Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves to whether you are in the faith.
We should never judge a book by its cover, but we should be able to determine whether people are followers of Christ by looking at them in action. Likewise, people should be able to look at us and know that we are following the Lord instead of the world's ways. Of course it is always easier for us to come to a conclusion (right or wrong) about someone else than to look honestly at ourselves.
Paul urged believers to scrutinize their own lives because God wants us to live according to the faith we profess. Our primary focus should always be on living our own lives in a Christlike manner rather than on critiquing those around us.
Jesus Christ abides in every believer, and His presence in our lives should make a difference that is obvious to all who know us. If there is no discernable difference between a person still living in spiritual darkness and a person who claims to live in the light of Christ, something is desperately wrong.
Our self-examination is therefore an opportunity to seek the Lord. Sinply ask Him to help you see yourself as He sees you and help you live so that the world knows you are His.
