Three Pieces of Advice for Spiritual Success
1. Trust in the Lord with all your heart.
2. Imitate the Lord in everything you do.
3. Keep going, no matter what.
These three instructions have guided me while serving God at home and on foreign soil for three decades.
The first came straight from the most reliable source of advice ever known, the Bible. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will maker your paths straight."(Proverbs 3:5-6)
The second was given to me by Reverend Bonnie J. Hall, while I was serving under her ministry and pioneering a church. She said, "Imitate the Lord in everything you say, and everything you do, and every place you go; and especially keep your eyes on the Master and not the pastor. Even well-meaning pastors will at times fail you, but God never will."
The third cane from Dr. Pauline Parham, while I was attending Christ for the Nation Institute back in the 1970's. I was to answer God's call to foreign missions. She told us, "When in ministry you will sometimes feel down, deserted, and as though no one cares. Encourage yourself by reaching down, getting hold of your bootstraps, and pulling yourself up. Then keep going, no matter what. If God is for you, who can be against you?"
